    Understanding the Effect of Tie Strength on Continuance Intention of Second-Generation Mobile Instant Messaging Services

    Facilitated by the widespread adoption of smartphones, applications (apps) on smartphones such as WeChat and WhatsApp have seen rapid and explosive growth. These apps are generally referred to as second-generation mobile instant messaging (SMIM) services. Unlike first-generation mobile instant messaging (FMIM) services (e.g. Short Message Service), SMIM services typically support multimedia contents and are embedded within social networks, which may have a bearing on the post-adoption behaviour of users in particular. However, prior studies on the post-adoption usage of SMIM services have a limited understanding of the effects of social network. Network tie strength, as a configuration of social network, has an important impact on users in SMIM services. In order to explore the effects of social network on users’ continued usage intention in SMIM services, we propose and empirically test an integrated model by identifying the antecedents such as tie strength, satisfaction, and perceived critical mass. This study contributes to existing IS post-adoption literature by understanding and capturing the role of social network (i.e. tie strength) in SMIM services. Implications for theory and practice are discussed

    Training Neural Networks for Sequential Change-point Detection

    Detecting an abrupt distributional shift of the data stream, known as change-point detection, is a fundamental problem in statistics and signal processing. We present a new approach for online change-point detection by training neural networks (NN), and sequentially cumulating the detection statistics by evaluating the trained discriminating function on test samples by a CUSUM recursion. The idea is based on the observation that training neural networks through logistic loss may lead to the log-likelihood function. We demonstrated the good performance of NN-CUSUM in the detection of high-dimensional data using both synthetic and real-world data

    Does adoption mean the same to every user? A study of active and passive usage of mobile instant messaging applications

    This research-in-progress paper studies the active and passive usage of mobile instant messaging (MIM) applications. Grounded on two-factor theory and three-factor theory, we propose the features of MIM applications influence the active/passive usage of MIM applications through users’ satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The proposed features are categorized into three factors: exciting factors which contain design aesthetics, customization and enjoyment, performance factors which include sociability, convenience and privacy assurance, and basic factors which are application costs and technical functionality. To test hypothetical relationships in this study, we plan to use a survey method. The potential implications to both literature and practice are discussed

    Study on Bearing Capacity of LVL Asymmetric Truss of Lightweight Poplar Wood

    Compared with natural wood, laminated veneer lumber has the characteristics of high strength, flexible specifications, excellent stability, and good economy. In order to study the bearing capacity of LVL trusses, the mechanical properties of LVL materials were tested. The static load test was carried out by using 3 pieces of LVL truss, and the load-deflection relationship, load-strain relationship, bearing capacity and failure mode of LVL trusses were studied. Based on the simplified joint analysis method, the metal plate connection and bolted truss were analyzed, and the bearing capacity calculation formula was developed. The results show that the upper chord instability is the main failure mode for large-span light LVL truss. A simplified formula for bearing capacity of LVL truss was proposed, and the predicted results were in good agreement with the experimental results. Finally, an application example of LVL truss engineering design and construction is briefly introduced. The research can provide technical support for the promotion and application of LVL truss of lightweight poplar wood

    Research on the electrochemical degradation and hydrogen generation of Fraxinus mandshurica by polyoxometalate

    The efficient utilization of wood waste is important for protecting the environment and solving the energy shortage problem. Taking Fraxinus mandshurica (FM) as an example, polyoxometalate (POM) was used as a catalyst for cyclic redox in an H-type electrolytic cell, where wood was oxidized to valuable small-molecule chemicals at the anode and hydrogen was generated at the cathode. The system successfully recycles energy, simultaneously converting biomass to chemical and electrical to hydrogen. Furthermore, the effects of various factors on the reaction were also investigated to obtain the optimal electrochemical conversion results for wood waste. At the optimal conditions, the FM degradation rate of 56.1%, with aromatic organic and carbonyl compounds as the main products, and the average Faraday efficiency of hydrogen generation can reach 93%, saving about 40% of energy consumption compared to water electrolysis at 0.1 A cm−2. Therefore, this electrochemical conversion method provides a new potential pathway for the application of wood waste.</p

    Detection rates of adenomas, advanced adenomas, and colorectal cancers among the opportunistic colonoscopy screening population: a single-center, retrospective study

    Abstract. Background:. Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is effective in reducing CRC incidence and mortality. The aim of this study was to retrospectively determine and compare the detection rate of adenomas, advanced adenomas (AAs) and CRCs, and the number needed to screen (NNS) of individuals in an average-risk Chinese population of different ages and genders. Methods:. This was a retrospective study performed at the Institute of Health Management, Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital. Colonoscopy results were analyzed for 53,152 individuals finally enrolled from January 2013 to December 2019. The detection rate of adenomas, AAs, or CRCs was computed and the characteristics between men and women were compared using chi-squared test. Results:. The average age was 48.8 years (standard deviation [SD], 8.5 years) for men and 50.0 years (SD, 9.0 years) for women, and the gender rate was 66.27% (35,226) vs. 33.73% (17,926). The detection rates of adenomas, AAs, serrated adenomas, and CRCs were 14.58% (7750), 3.09% (1641), 1.23% (653), and 0.59% (313), respectively. Men were statistically significantly associated with higher detection rates than women in adenomas (17.20% [6058/35,226], 95% confidence interval [CI] 16.74–17.53% vs. 9.44% [1692/17,926], 95% CI 8.94–9.79%, P < 0.001), AAs (3.72% [1309], 95% CI 3.47–3.87% vs. 1.85% [332], 95% CI 1.61–2.00%, P < 0.001), and serrated adenomas (1.56% [548], 95% CI 1.43–1.69% vs. 0.59% [105], 95% CI 0.47–0.70%, P < 0.001). The detection rate of AAs in individuals aged 45 to 49 years was 3.17% (270/8510, 95% CI 2.80–3.55%) in men and 1.69% (69/4091, 95% CI 1.12–1.86%) in women, and their NNS was 31.55 (95% CI 28.17–35.71) in men and 67.11 (95% CI 53.76–89.29) in women. The NNS for AAs in men aged 45 to 49 years was close to that in women aged 65 to 69 years (29.07 [95% CI 21.05–46.73]). Conclusions:. The detection rates of adenomas, AAs, and serrated adenomas are high in the asymptomatic population undergoing a physical examination and are associated with gender and age. Our findings will provide important references for effective population-based CRC screening strategies in the future

    Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy for advanced biliary malignancies

    Abstract. Background:. Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) has been considered the only curative treatment for metastatic cholangiocarcinoma and some locally advanced gallbladder cancers (GBCs). However, HPD has not yet been included in treatment guidelines as a standard surgical procedure in consideration of its morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of HPD in treating biliary malignancies. Methods:. The medical records of 57 patients with advanced biliary cancer undergoing HPD from January 2009 to December 2019 were retrospectively retrieved. A case-control analysis was conducted at our department. Patients with advanced GBC who underwent HPD (HPD-GBC group) were compared with a control group (None-HPD-GBC group). Baseline characteristics, preoperative treatments, tumor pathologic features, operative results, and prognosis were assessed. Results:. Thirteen patients with cholangiocarcinoma and 44 patients with GBC underwent HPD at our department. Significant postoperative complications (grade III or greater) and postoperative pancreatic fistula were observed in 24 (42.1%) and 15 (26.3%) patients, respectively. One postoperative death occurred in the present study. Overall survival (OS) was longer in patients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma than in those with GBC (median survival time [MST], 31 months vs. 11 months; P < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis of patients with advanced GBC, multivariate analysis demonstrated that T4 stage tumors (P = 0.012), N2 tumors (P = 0.001), and positive margin status (P = 0.004) were independently associated with poorer OS. Patients with either one or more prognostic factors exhibited a shorter MST than patients without those prognostic factors (P < 0.001). Conclusion:. HPD could be performed with a relatively low mortality rate and an acceptable morbidity rate in an experienced high- volume center. For patients with advanced GBC without an N2 or T4 tumor, HPD can be a preferable treatment option
